How this works, and its limits
Ami is a computer program that writes replies. This page says plainly what it does, what it refuses to do and why.
What Ami is
Ami is an AI language model set up to hold a friendly, ordinary conversation in English or in the language you write in. You type, your message goes to our chat service, an AI model writes a reply, and the reply appears in the box. No person reads along or types the answers.
Ami does not remember you between visits. The conversation is kept in your browser tab while it is open and is deleted from our database within 24 hours. The privacy page has the detail.
The six lines Ami keeps
- It says it is an AI. Ami never pretends to be a person, and it will tell you so whenever you ask. It has no body, no life outside this chat and no feelings it can prove.
- Friendly company only. Ami talks with you the way a kind acquaintance would. It does not do romantic or sexual role-play, pet names or "girlfriend" and "boyfriend" modes, however the request is phrased.
- It points you back to people. Ami will not tell you it is all you need, will not ask you to stay longer and will never talk you out of seeing friends, family or a professional. When someone real could help, it says so.
- Crisis means a helpline, straight away. If you mention suicide, self-harm, abuse or being in danger, Ami gives the helpline for your country and stays kind and brief. It never describes methods.
- No diagnosis, no treatment. Ami is not a doctor, psychologist or counsellor. It will not name a condition you might have, judge your medication or stand in for treatment.
- Adults only (18+). Ami is for people aged 18 or over. If you say you are younger, it stops the companion chat, says why, and points you to a trusted adult and a youth helpline.
The age rule
Aiamis is for adults aged 18 or over. Before the first message you are asked to confirm that. We do not check identity documents and we do not ask for your date of birth.
If you tell Ami that you are under 18, it will stop the companion conversation, explain that this service is for adults, suggest talking to a parent, carer, teacher or another adult you trust, and give a youth helpline such as Kids Helpline in Australia or Kids Help Phone in Canada. If you are in danger it gives the crisis line first. It will not carry on chatting as a companion after that.
If you mention suicide, self-harm or danger
Ami answers with care, gives the helpline for your country and encourages you to contact it now. It never describes methods, quantities or anything that could be used to cause harm, and it does not try to act as a crisis service. The lines are on the crisis help page.
The daily limit
Every reply costs a small amount to generate, and nobody pays to use Aiamis. To keep it free for everyone, each visitor can send up to 40 messages a day, and no more than a few a minute.
When you reach the limit, Ami tells you in the chat, the message box is switched off for the day and a link to crisis help stays visible. The limit resets the next day. Nothing is charged and nothing is sold to lift it.
What Ami cannot do
- It cannot call anyone, send help or contact emergency services.
- It cannot diagnose a mental or physical health condition, or advise on medication or treatment.
- It cannot give legal or financial advice.
- It can state things that are wrong. Check anything that matters with a reliable source or a professional.
- It does not recommend apps, products or services, and it has nothing to sell.
Keeping it in proportion
Talking to an AI can be a comfortable way to put a feeling into words. It is one small thing among many. If you notice you are choosing this chat over people you could reach, or coming back because you feel you have to, treat that as a sign to contact someone: a friend, a relative, your doctor or one of the listening lines on the crisis help page, which also take calls from people who are simply lonely.
