What an AI Companion Cannot Do in an Emergency

An AI companion cannot call anyone or send help, so in an emergency call your local emergency number now. If your question is about AI companion limits in an emergency, the boundary is direct: Ami can hold a friendly, ordinary conversation, but it cannot contact emergency services. Do not wait for a chat to act; use the country numbers below.

Emergency numbers and helplines

This is a contact list, not a ranking or an endorsement.

Keep Aiamis Crisis Help as a single reference. Aiamis says it has no relationship with the organisations listed there and receives nothing from them.

What the call-taker asks

The US National 911 Program describes an emergency as a situation requiring immediate assistance from the police, fire department or ambulance, and says to dial 911 immediately. The call-taker will ask for the location of the emergency, including the street address.

Australia’s Triple Zero guidance likewise asks you to give the operator an address or location so they know where to send emergency services. That location exchange is part of the call. Ami cannot make the call or contact emergency services.

Why the chat cannot take over

Ami is an AI language model set up for friendly, ordinary conversation, and no person types its replies. Aiamis also says that Ami can state things that are wrong, so anything important should be checked against a reliable source or a professional.

That boundary matters. A generated sentence and an emergency action are not the same thing. A chat may display a number or encourage you to contact someone, but it cannot take that action on your behalf. The practical response begins when your call or message reaches a service outside the chat.

Aiamis states plainly that Ami is not a crisis service or a substitute for people. It can be friendly company, but it cannot take responsibility for your safety or carry out an emergency response.

What a company policy can tell you

In its wellbeing guidance, Anthropic says its model is not a substitute for professional advice or medical care and should point people towards human support where possible, including helplines, professionals, trusted friends or family. Anthropic also describes a crisis banner that directs users to chat with a trained professional, call a helpline or access country-specific resources.

Those are clear instructions and signposts. A banner is not itself an emergency response, and a company statement about intended behaviour does not mean a call has been placed or help has been sent. The statement also applies to Anthropic’s product, not automatically to every AI system.

Listening line or emergency number?

The US 988 Lifeline says you can call, text or chat with a trained person for support at any time, day or night. Its information for callers says the conversation is free and confidential.

SAMHSA says that when the person calling or the person they are calling about is in physical danger, the 988 service will contact 911 for emergency support. SAMHSA also identifies 911 as the primary contact for medical emergencies, fire, crimes in progress or other situations requiring immediate physical intervention.

Canada’s 9-8-8 service gives a direct instruction: if your safety is at risk, call 911 right away. These are the services’ own descriptions of their roles. A listening line provides a human conversation; an emergency number provides a route to immediate assistance. The list does not rank them.

What Ami can do

If you tell Ami that you are in danger, it gives the helpline for your country and stays kind and brief. It will not tell you that it is all you need, ask you to stay longer, or discourage you from seeing friends, family or a professional.

Aiamis says talking to an AI can be a comfortable way to put a feeling into words, but it is one small thing among many. If you notice that you are choosing the chat instead of people you could reach, Aiamis suggests contacting a friend, relative, doctor or one of the listening lines on its crisis page; those lines also take calls from people who are simply lonely.

That is the honest role of the companion: friendly conversation, with a clear pointer back to people and services. It does not turn the chat into a crisis response.

Keep the distinction clear

Ami can offer company in a chat. It cannot call, send help, contact emergency services or act as a crisis service. If you need immediate help, call your local emergency number now. If you want to speak with a trained person, use the relevant contact above or open Aiamis Crisis Help. Keep those routes separate from ordinary conversation.
