Clearing a chat from your screen is not the same as deleting a copy held by an AI company. If you mean to delete ai chat data, read the service’s deletion wording to see what leaves the screen, what is removed from stored systems, and what may still be retained.
What documented policies say
The linked policy pages and Aiamis details below reflect what was documented on 2 October 2026.
Anthropic’s Privacy Center says you can delete your Claude conversations at any time. For its consumer products, the same policy page says a deleted conversation leaves chat history immediately and is removed from back-end storage within 30 days.
That timetable has exceptions. The Privacy Center says inputs and outputs flagged by its trust and safety systems can be retained for up to 2 years. It also says that, if you allow chats to be used to improve the model, data may be kept in a de-identified format for up to 5 years. A chat can therefore leave visible history while longer retention still applies in some cases, according to the same policy.
Google’s Manage & delete your activity in Gemini Apps says deleting activity immediately starts removal from the product and its systems. The same page says conversations are saved with your account for up to 72 hours even when Keep Activity is off, so Google can provide the service and process feedback.
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says chats already reviewed by human reviewers are not deleted when you delete activity; those chats are retained for up to three years. The Privacy Hub also gives an auto-delete period of 18 months by default, with choices of 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite, and says chats can be deleted manually at any time. Manual deletion can therefore coexist with a separate retention rule for reviewed chats, as the Privacy Hub explains.
Microsoft’s Copilot privacy FAQ says conversation activity is stored for 18 months by default, and you can delete an individual conversation or the entire history at any time. The same FAQ says turning off personalization does not delete conversation history, although Copilot will forget its memories and stop personalizing the experience. A personalization setting therefore does not answer a request to remove existing history, as the same FAQ makes clear.
How to check the wording
Treat deletion as a question about scope, timing and exceptions. Before using a control, check the wording around it:
- Does the control cover the chat on screen, your account’s activity, an individual conversation, or the full history?
- Does it say when removal starts? If so, is there a separate time for stored copies to be cleared?
- Does the policy keep any human-reviewed, trust-and-safety-flagged, or model-improvement data under a longer period?
- Does changing a setting remove data that already exists, or only change how the service personalizes or retains activity?
- Is there a browser copy that needs a separate clear or close action?
Think of the screen copy and the stored copy as separate places. Emptying what you can see tells you little about what happens elsewhere unless the policy connects the two.
The wording after the control matters as much as its name. A start time tells you when removal begins. A storage deadline describes when the stated copy is gone. A retention exception tells you what may remain. Do not turn “clear,” “close,” or a changed setting into a broader deletion promise than the page makes.
If a policy does not name a route for deletion, leave that question unanswered. Do not treat closing a tab, clearing a local display, or changing a setting as a substitute unless the wording expressly says it deletes stored data.
Keep the date with your note, too. Check the current wording when you return to the service, since the documented details may have changed.
Aiamis’s deletion details
Aiamis’s privacy page says each conversation’s messages and replies are stored in the chat service’s database and deleted within 24 hours of the conversation starting. The same page says the conversation so far stays in your own browser tab until you close the tab or press “New chat.”
Aiamis also says a random conversation ID, the time, the page address, the language and a two-letter country code are stored with the conversation and deleted with it. The IP address itself is not stored with the conversation, according to the privacy page.
Because conversations are not linked to an identity and are deleted within that window, Aiamis usually cannot find a particular conversation to send or delete on request, as the same page explains.
For each reply, your message and earlier messages in the same conversation are sent to an AI model provider, which processes the text on its own servers under its own terms. That provider is a separate part of the data path, so Aiamis’s 24-hour statement does not describe the provider’s storage or removal, the privacy page notes.
The page also says that, for up to 24 hours, the people who maintain the service have technical access to the database.
Keep the next chat lighter
For future chats, Aiamis’s privacy page asks you not to type passwords, card or bank numbers, identity numbers, your address, or private details about other people. Preventing sensitive details from entering a chat is a separate privacy step from deleting a conversation later.
Before you finish, note what you cleared and what the current policy says about stored copies. That small record helps you tell a clean screen from a completed deletion. If you want to reach a person now, Aiamis’s crisis help page lists services run by trained people.
